because late-season miracles seem to be my specialty...

I have a job offer. It is tenure-track. I said yes.

That is all.

  4. Congratulations! A great relief, and to think there will be more chances to show 19 year olds that Hal is not so admirable after all. I'm so pleased.

  7. Thanks for the congratulations, everyone! I'm just giddy with excitement!

Flavia -- Yeah, I'm very happy; it's a small college with a nice friendly vibe to it, and it's in a pretty, historic town, which makes me happy even though I know that isn't everything.

Bardiac -- I hope I live, too. That sounds like a nice modest ambition right now :)

  9. Cordial congratulations!

Once you've settled down there (wherever exactly it is (you'll have to invent a name for that new place to use on this blog ("redbrick college"?)): would you be interested to pursue that old idea of a conference on "styles of teaching"?

Anyway: once again: congratulations, and best wishes!

  14. hck -- I'm not sure I'll have time in the foreseeable future, unfortunately. The idea was yours, anyway, and it sounds like most of the relevant expertise is, too.

And I have decided that the new place will be called "Misnomer U."

What Now, dance, maude lebowski, phantomcranefly, and Lucky Jane -- Thanks!

  15. Well: the person who's far better at writing about "styles of teaching" is definitely you: you are a great observer and a reporter with a sense of humour.
    Concerning "expertise": I don't know. I'm probably just older .... .
Anyway: I'll consider this as "temporarily buried, with small but existent chances of revival".

Most importantly: Best wishes for lots of fun at "Misnomer U."!

  16. Rock on! When we met at MLA, I really thought that you would definitely be someone who would land somewhere for the duration. While the wait could've been a little less agonizing to you, it paid off.

    Congrats!!
